MCSE Jobs And Applicant Listings
New findings by the National InfoComm Competency Centre (NICC) underscore what many in the local infocomm industry already suspect: many professionals here need to acquire new skills and qualifications, or be ready to work outside Singapore, to stay relevant and competitive.
The good news is that professional certification obtained locally is increasingly being valued by companies advertising for jobs. In greatest demand here are Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and Certified Infocomm Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
The findings were drawn primarily from an analysis of the NICC's database of about 1,000 infocomm professionals and its jobs listings website. NICC is an accreditation body for infocomm certification programmes.
The study found that, on average, there were four applicants for every infocomm job listing that NICC carried on its website. However, this did not mean that all four infocomm professionals chasing a listed position were unemployed at the time of application, NICC clarified. Moreover the number of job listings was small relative to the population of infocomm workers. While it was difficult to determine the number of infocomm jobs available and the number of professionals chasing those jobs, 'the infocomm unemployment situation could be even worse than what the NICC figures indicate. On the positive front, retraining and certification like MCSE are seen to improve the chances of infocomm professionals getting the jobs they. And applicants could help themselves even more by matching their training to market needs. To illustrate, the top infocomm jobs according to positions listed were application/software developer, systems engineer, project manager, technical consultant, IT administrator and systems analyst. Against this, the top five jobs in order of applications received were application/software developer, systems engineer, technical consultant, IT administrator and systems analyst. This showed project manager positions were attracting relatively fewer applications. Infocomm professionals could thus help their cause by acquiring project management skills. Those coming into the job market should also look at potential growth areas like Web services and wireless technology. The area of Web services was new but recent activities suggest demand. She said expertise in wireless technology could be exported to countries in the region, and competency in this area would help professionals find good jobs. NICC's Infocomm Career Connection (ICC) database is accessible through respective websites of NICC, the Ministry of Manpower website and the Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF). The database includes resumes from infocomm professionals who applied for IT certification programmes, applicants applying for jobs through the ICC website and subscribers of MY PACE, an NICC programme to help retrenched, unemployed and employed infocomm workers in Singapore.
