Bootcamps And Microsoft Certifications
The MCSE credential is a certification for professionals who analyse the requirements, as well as design and implement the infrastructure, for business solutions based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform and Microsoft server software. Implementation responsibilities include installing, configuring and troubleshooting network systems. The MCSE boot camp training is appropriate for systems engineers, technical support engineers, systems analysts, network analysts and technical consultants. It is one of the most widely recognised technical certifications in the IT industry.
Don Carlson, education marketing manager, Microsoft, said, "By raising the bar there will be less MCSEs but they will be better qualified and be of more value. It won't just be a piece of paper; they will really know their stuff."
The MCSE consists of four core modules plus one design module and two electives. All seven modules have exams, which must be passed, before gaining the certification. People typically take six to 12 months to do the course.
All 45 Microsoft Certified Technical Education Centres (CTECs) around Australia are Instructor Led Training (ILT) organisations and vary only in costs and flexibility of delivery. The following is a sample. Aspect has a package comprising 18 days of ILT for the four core subjects, one design subject and two electives of varying lengths plus the seven exam vouchers, for a cost of $ 12,733. Auldhouse does ILT on-site or off-site for corporates such as Bankers Trust, charging $ 11,800 plus exam costs. Educom's costs between $ 11,000 and $ 12,000 depending on electives, with exams extra. Skill Master's list price is $ 15,345 for seven modules, with exam costs extra. Students can buy a seven-course package from Ngapartji (South Australia) for $ 6995 excluding exams. If extra ILT is required it will set you back $ 395 per day. Drake Training in Victoria charges $ 9090 for the 18 days to cover the four core modules, with each subsequent day for electives costing $ 505, plus exam costs. If a student pays upfront the MCSE (excluding exams) will cost $ 9900 at Com Tech Education Services. Spherion's standard 27-day ILT MCSE with pre-selected electives costs $ 10,543, with exams extra. ONLINE Microsoft Xpress online self-paced training costs $ 1500 plus exam costs. NetG and SmartForce also offer comprehensive online MCSE courseware with simulations, chat rooms, help desks, practice exams and complete tracking of the learning process. NetG estimates the cost of its courseware is 60 per cent lower than classroom ILT. Bootcamps are a fast-tracking way of getting people through an MCSE. They can be useful for people who already have the experience, background and history working with Microsoft products and need intensive instruction to pass the exams. Spherion has combination boot-camp-style courses based partially on Web-based self-study and Instructor Led Lab courses. ExecuTrain, which already delivers MCSE boot camp training online through its electronic virtual campus, will commence its first MCSE bootcamp this month. The 10 days of intensive classroom study costs around $ 6000, which is half of the usual ILT MCSE course. Australian company Training & Support (T&S) will begin its MCSE bootcamps in September. The bootcamp laboratory will accommodate 10 people and T&S plans to make the learning entertaining and as pleasurable as possible.
