A good foundation programme for a networking career is CompTIA's A+ certification. This programme certifies the competency of entry-level (six months of experience) computer service technicians.
The certification equips individuals with hardware and basic operating system knowledge and skills. The A+ exam has two parts - core hardware and operating systems - and is not tied to any vendor-specific products. Besides A+ certification, CompTIA also offers Network+. This programm provides knowledge on fundamental networking and a wide variety of networking technologies. It measures the technical knowledge of networking professionals with at least nine months' experience in network support or administration. Wide choices. If you are more interested in gaining knowledge of a specific networking technology, then there are various levels of options from Microsoft, Cisco, Novell and Linux. Microsoft's networking track, the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) for Windows 2003, seems to be the most sought after these days. It comes as no surprise as more organisations worldwide adopt Microsoft products like MCSE 2003 for their networks and hence the need for qualified personnel to help implement and support these network increases. Cisco's networking certifications have also gained much prominence since its networking products take the lead in running the Internet. Cisco offers three levels of general certifications - Associate, Professional and Expert - and three different paths, namely network installation and support, network engineering and design, and communications and services. Certification benefits for the employee are numerous. Salary surveys indicate that certification is one of the top factors influencing raises. Microsoft reports that two-thirds of their respondents attributed a salary increase to successful certification. Multiple studies show that companies are willing to pay more for workers with certification(s). In fact, certifications are one of the first listings found on employee resumes. They help IT professionals reach their potential and although an employer often pays for training and testing, the certification belongs to the individual.
